I Do Swear...

On Sunday, Robert Mugabe said: “I, Robert Gabriel Mugabe, do swear that I will, well and truly, serve Zimbabwe in the office of President - so help me God.

serving-zimbabwe-02-texted_KWoEw_16744

Yesterday, we saw Mugabe, as a‘world leader’ making a complete fool of himself to an ITV reporter who had asked him under what authority he was the President of Zimbabwe, to which Mugabe answered, “The same authority that makes Gordon Brown Prime Minister of Zimbabwe” - or words to that effect.

After a brief physical altercation with Mugabe’s close security personnel, Mugabe was heard to be baying, “Bloody idiots!”

Then ,this morning we hear that Mugabe’s spokesman, George Chiramba, has said: “They can go and hang a thousand times, they have no basis, they have no claim on Zimbabwean politics at all.” (“They” being the West.)

Okay - so let’s look at these two incidents in the broad light of day.

Mugabe swore an oath on Sunday that he would serve Zimbabwe (and hence, Zimbabweans) to the best of his ability. For the last 28 years Mugabe has done everything else but serve the people. So his swearing in on Sunday was a farce, and to cap it all, he picked up a Bible and said, “So help my God.”

Mugabe would have us believe that he is appointed by God, not the voters (and we know that at least this time around, he was not appointed by the people), and here he is, in public, swearing an oath under God to serve! He also makes the nonsensical claim that only God can remove him from power.

Mmmm.

His outburst on Monday in Egypt shows the true colours of Mugabe. He classes himself above all other mortal beings, and will resort to behaviour unbecoming of a world leader. But then again, he isn’t a world leader - he is a bully that has used every trick in the book to remain in power, that’s all.

Having cursed the journalist, Mugabe probably would have been better to have made his Sunday oath, “I swear”… and leave it at that.

This morning’s statement by the erstwhile Chiramba also deserves some sort of mention.

If you get the time, listen to the telephone interview that Violet Gonda, of SW Radio Africa, had with Chiramba a few days ago.

The man becomes virtually apoplectic with Violet, who was asking questions which he refused to answer. He made allegations that SWRA was a wing of the MDC, going even further, stating that the radio station was a part of an English ploy to befoul Mugabe’s rule.

I was absolutely amazed when Chiramba told Violet that he knew where she came from and that the people of her village would know of her poor reporting skills. He screamed: “Come back to Zimbabwe! That is where the real fight is!”

He was frothing at the mouth and began to pick Violet apart for asking what appeared, to me at least, to be quite rational questions.

Chiramba finished the call by speaking over Violet, accusing her of all manner of allegiances and crimes, and telling her that Mugabe’s government would rule for ever in Zimbabwe, and that ZANU PF would NEVER - EVER hand power to the English puppets (the MDC).

Poor Violet. But she finished the interview and was obviously relieved. So was I, because having a madman shouting at you on the end of a telephone cannot be what is described as ‘fun’.

So - when you have a spokesman who will say whatever fits, and will launch himself headlong into a telephone interview with a temper than knows no boundaries, and when you have a virtually self-appointed President of the country swearing at journalists - well, one might have to reconsider whereabouts in the pecking order Zimbabwe might lurk.

On these standards, not very high at all.

@ Robb,

"Mugabe would have us believe that he is appointed by God, not the voters (and we know that at least this time around, he was not appointed by the people), and here he is, in public, swearing an oath under God to serve!"

Didn't you know government's work is God's work? :-D

Jokes apart, this is a symptom kings often suffer from. Most kings believe that they are appointed by god or god reincarnate himself. Do you think at 86 Mugabe must have lost his mind and thinking that way?

Zimbabwe should immediately be kicked out of the African Union of the African Union must suffer sanctions from the rest of the world. It is tough but a stand needs to be taken. I have been reading horrific reports of abuse and torture coming out of Zimbabwe for several years now and it is a grave humanitarian crisis out there.

Mugabe is not even sparing infants. A report in TIMES ONLINE reads as follows -
Blessing Mabhena, aged 11 months, was seized from a bed and flung down with force as his mother, Agnes, hid from the thugs, convinced that they were about to murder her.

She heard one of them say, “Let’s kill the baby”, before Blessing was hurled on to a bare concrete floor.

Now what can you say about such a regime?

Mugabe has become an insane dangerous man and also leading a tribe of his own insane kind. I could not do the story based on above link given by Shamshed...it defies humanity...it defies sanity...
Now US, West and AU is talking of all kinds sanctions when the man is almost wiping his hands after the genocide...very unfortunate...even Nelson Mandela has played a disappointing role...

Every one seems to be focusing on criticizing the Mugabe regime. No one seems to be talking about a possible solution of this particular problem. It doesn't seem practical to remove Mugabe and his ZANU-PF party straightaway from power. The MDC would never be allowed to form government. Neither an armed intervention by the international community under an UN mandate possible because of Russia and more importantly China and opposition from most of the AU members.

So what is the best possible way?

I reckon the West must seriously start looking for a top leader within the ZANU-PF and one from the top military bosses and bribe them with offers that they can't refuse that may or may not include a short term rein over Zimbabwe. This might solve the crisis.

Mugabe funds his army and his henchmen really well. If you didn't know, almost 40% of his GDP goes into feeding his cronies. Then there is China, the world's worst violator of Human Rights. Oh, Hu Jin Tao's regime game him a palatial palace!

I met a witchdoctor in Zambia in 1996. Long back. I was full of praise for the guy Mugabe and the British politicians especially the gorgeous Peter Hain. You might find it spooky but the witchdoctor did really tell me that Mugabe is good but how long would he be so. That was just the beginning of his anti-democratic ways (of course may years after the infamous Gukurahundi. The world ignored it then primarily because of the apartheid situation of South Africa and its occupation of Namibia. But the illiterate witchdoctor haunts my dreams now. Is he still alive. That was 12 years back and he was old and frail.

Wouldn't it have been better that instead of Robert G Mugabe, Joshua Nkomo becoming the president of Zimbabwe? Hard to say as it is hard to blame Mugabe... Who are the people behind him that is forcing him to be the way he is? Can't say for sure, or can we?

Why isn't there rmore outrage from the international community over this guy's farce of an election. It is disgraceful that many countries especially in Asia like China are maintaining such great relationships with them. I am however sorry that countries like India are supporting Mugabe. Do they still live in history?

What do you expect when gorillas run countries themselves? Of course they would ask the civilized world to hang themselves, ain't so? When baboons, chimps and the master gorilla is at the help of affairs, humans and their rights can afford to take a back seat.

O.K. then, someone suggested a possible solution. Here is another solution and that can really work. South Africa is not exactly a Zimbabwe. It has the right institutions at the right places still despite the brain dead chimp called Thabo Mbeki. Now strike South Africa where it hurts most. If UK and democracy loving countries boycotted the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa if threats to do so do not work, then it might send a strong signal to the country and do something for its bleeding population across the border in Zim.

Robb, don't you think Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC should have dug in their heels and faced the run-off. I know they took a principled stand when a lot of us were being picked up and tortured. This would have at least given them another day to fight on and then we could have questioned the outcome of the election results. Giving a walkover is no solution. The AU yesterday acted pathetically too.

Time to say goodbye to Zimbabwe. It is not a question of being loyal to one's country. If you looked the other way we never had boundaries before. Only the colonial powers made them happen. I belong to Zambia or Uganda or South Africa just as I belong to Zimbabwe. It's just a question of moving away. Will come back when I have a job, a nice farm to work in and less money to pay for the food for my family. Bye bye Bob.

All: The comments that this editorial received is a prime example of what is happening in Zimbabwe. We all have our ideas as to how to ’fix’ Zimbabwe, but in real terms we are unable to do very much with Mugabe in control.

That is not to cast any slur upon those that did comment. But it shows that even my/our writings or ideas are not enough to somehow rid us of Mugabe and ZANU PF.

And we must be aware that Tsvangirai and the MDC are an untested power...

Andrew: Ref the comment abour Blessing Mabhena - I actually used the photo of little Blessing in my graphic before the editorial was even written... That graphic accompanies the article.

Christopher: The AU, SADC and the UN have behaved abominably with regards to Zimbabwe.

Any other country and the solution would have been found and implimented years ago. I despair for all Zimbabweans in that country.

Yes - I am frustrated. Yes - I am angry. Yes - I am deeply disappointed.

Take care.
